I've had the same installation of Gentoo linux on my home PC since 2003 or so. It was back when Gentoo was versioned with numbers, 1.4 I believe it was. Anyway since then I've had plenty of hassle in keeping the thing updated with the latest in portage. I have never needed to reinstall it though and that has been a major blessing. But you know what? It's worth it. I see all these OSX goodies and I agree OSX is better because it is UNIX with all the proprietary extras. But my platform is totally opensource and I think it's worth the slight pains here and there for the intrinsic benefits. Although I wish to keep my main PC Gentoo Linux, I think my next laptop will have to be a Mac (I hear you can put portage on a Mac). However if like Microsoft Apple starts to try to lock me into crap (e-mail, contacts, whatever) and I can't export my data, then I'm gone in a heart beat. That's one of the reasons I wouldn't ever use iTunes unless I first figured out how PlayFair works.
