Politics, Programming and Possibilities

I signed up for a 2-year Mozy account a little while ago. I like their approach to backup—it’s simple, and automatic. And it’s off-site, so if my office burns down or has things stolen, the data is somewhere else. It’s just the sort of thing I need in order to feel safe about my data being backed up.
The trouble is that this is “theoretically” safe, because I can’t seem to get it to consistently do its job on the Mac. I sent my first experience to Mozy support (their response was “make sure you’re using the latest code”) :
1. I tried backing up my home folder, a total of 70.1 GB. That 11 day process was interrupted when I closed my clamshell laptop.
2. I tried letting it continue, but realized that, actually, I don’t care about *all* of the data for now, I’d much rather know that my *most important* data is backed up. So I reduced the things Mozy should back up to about 300 MB.
3. The process continued to back things up, but paused at about 80% of 300 MB and then said it had been cancelled. I didn’t cancel it, so I’m not sure what caused that.
4. I now have the following message in my “Mozy Backup Status” window: “No successful backups yet. Last backup was cancelled 5 hours ago.”.
5. If I press the “Start Backup” button, it switches to a message that says “Backup in progress… Scanning for files…” and remains in that state indefinitely. The “Total prepared” remains at 0%, the “Total transferred” remains at 0%, and the transfer rate in both cases remains at 0.0 bits/sec.
6. I then went to my online account to see what might be listed there. Under “My Computer” it claims to have stored 268.4 MB of something (whether from the original batch, or the second, or third, I’m not sure).
Eventually, after reducing the backup load to a fraction of what I wanted to backup, it finally went through. Then I slowly increased the backup set to include most of my mission-critical files. I still wish I could backup some of my home videos and/or music collection, but that can wait.
Now, however, things are still not fully satisfactory. Today, Mozy tried to back things up again, and send my CPU into overload as it showed me that it was doing nothing (screencast here, 1 min).

I hope their Mac product is improved in the near future. I may reconsider Mozy as a backup option if not.

Duane, I apologize for the experience you’ve had. I’m happy to help any way I can to escalate the issue and help you get it resolved. Please e-mail me directly - devin@mozy.com.
I had the same problems with Mozy for Mac (uploaded about 10 GB across 200,000+ files by steadily increasing my backup set, only to have each subsequent backup peg my CPU). I ended up giving it up. Mozy seems like a great company; their engineers seem pretty on top of things in general, but their Mac product just isn’t there yet.
In the meantime, if you’re git-inclined, may I recommend gibak by mfp (http://eigenclass.org/hiki/gibak-0.3.0). It’s more of a ‘roll-your-own’ solution, but it’s been working out really well for me so far.
@Devin: Thank you, I’ll be happy to work with you to see if we can get this situation fixed.
@Brad: Neat! I’ll check that out.
Well, Duane, I’m pleased that Mozy got back to you relatively quickly.
I’ve been without backup for over a week now and, despite 3 emails to Mozy home support, I’ve had zero response. I did follow their recommended process and included relavent debug files, but still nothing.
I would also add that it’s only because I checked the logfiles that I realised I had a problem. A more naive user would view the lack of red-alerts as a sign that everything was just dandy.
So, today, I removed the Mozy client *and* deleted my account at mozy.com, and it looks as if it’s now working.

I’ve been experiencing the same problems with Mozy for mac. For the past 3 weeks or so, I’ve been leaving my computer on overnight with only Mozy running, in an attempt to get the backup done (about 25gb total).
I think the problem might just be the language they use — the “backup cancelled” and “mozy has not successfully backed up” seem misleading to me. I’ve been operating under the assumption (despite those messages), that my backup is getting done incrementally, despite being “cancelled” every time I turn off my computer or disconnect from the internet.
If that is in fact the case, Mozy (to start) just needs to improve their messaging. That said, I’ve found the entire process to be pretty amazingly slow so far.
I am experiencing exactly the same problem. Just installed Mozy today on a Mac, and it says “scanning for files…” for hours, without actually doing anything.
I stopped it, removed the client, reinstalled it. Same situation. Waiting for Mozy support to come back to me.
Duane-
Same problem here too. I had to uninstall Mozy for my new MacBook Pro, OS 10.5, 2GB RAM. As soon as I did, my entire computer started running faster.
Anyway, I noticed that you, like me, have the EVERNOTE HELPER in your menu bar. I wonder if there might be a particular problem with Mozy for people that have Evernote Helper running in the backround too.
I tried Mozy back in early 2008 and had the same problem. At that time I sent 2 emails to customer support and never heard anything back. Went with Carbonite instead. It worked great for a year, but now having issues with it(remote access doesn’t show anything, reinstalled on new PC and after more than 2 weeks still not completely backed up, client shows more than 200 gig backed up, but have less than 125 gig in total user files and much is selected not to backed up). Really beginning to believe that online backup is just not ready for real use. Carbonite support is only slightly better than I got with Mozy. They respond, but incomplete answers.
Interesting. I did a trial of Mozy for one of my home PCs, but the file restoration process turned me off. Several other companies are now offering support for PC, Mac & Linux (MiSafe, SpiderOak, DropBox) computers. And software applications that let you use your Amazon S3 storage (BackBlaze, JungleDisk, CloudBerry). I expect some of these will give the likes of Mozy & Carbonite a good run for the money. I’m seeing several positive comments on SpiderOak. Particularly like being able to do backup/restore, share storage & sync files across PC, Mac and Linux platforms.
I am having the exact same issues as many above. I need the backup so I can do a clean reinstall…but at this rate that will never happen.
If you are looking for an alternative to Mozy or Carbonite, you can check out our data protection service online at http://www.tomnica.com.
