Scott Thorpe read my last post about my green wireless access point and we got to talking about wireless, self-healing “mesh” networks at the community level: it turns out that several open-source solutions are already around!
A website dedicated to supporting these free community wireless networks, cuwireless.net, has an interesting kit available to create a weather-proof outdoor access point.
I haven’t been able to find any Provo-based wifi networks based on this idea yet. Are there any Provo-ites out there who might be interested in building a network / mesh like this?
Update: Scott has posted a blog about our conversation too.

It’s funny you should mention this. I just came back from installing some mesh nodes over the past few days in Michigan. We don’t use the cuwin system, we use the LocustWorld software as a base. But the idea is the same. They do self heal, and the routing is awesome. We run a wireless isp using these with several locations. Our reasoning behind this was to reach areas that traditional ISP’s are outright shunning. It works very well.
I forgot to add, you can get most of the hardware you need for any of these systems from mini-box.com fairly inexpensively. We use the wrap board setup you see on the front page. I recommend using engenous cards.
@Michael: Thanks! The mini-box.com link looks very promising… only $50 for a box! Wow!
